OTPP 757 - Business of Chronic Pain

Description
This lecture combines two worlds pain science and business. More than 100 million Americans are affected by some form of chronic pain. This increase of chronic pain is associated with increased utilization, cost and added burden on healthcare providers. All of this is in lieu of healthcare reform. Emerging research into neurophysiology and neurobiology of pain clearly shows that movement and bio-psycho-social professions are ideal to treat these patients. The increase in chronic pain and general dissatisfaction by patients with care provided creates a unique business opportunity. Addition- ally, advanced therapeutic treatments for pain, such as therapeutic neuroscience education, graded motor imagery, pacing, graded exposure, exercise and more will become increasingly desirable due to its low cost and its empowerment of the patient. This lecture will focus heavily on the use and clinical implementation of pain sciences in the real world of clinical practice. Content will include the evidence for pain science education, how to apply pain science to clinical practice, billing, time and cost-effectiveness, staff training, integration into movement-based therapies, marketing, building a multi-disciplinary clinic and more. Come learn how very successful practices have developed cutting-edge and highly successful pain programs. Upon completion of this course, a successful learner will have gained the foundational knowledge in preparation for the onsite or virtual lab in order to learn the skills necessary to physically test the nervous system for pathological changes and implement the best course of action using graded motor imagery treatment principles.
