Accessibility Services and Accommodations
The Office of Student Services provides support to students with disabilities requiring accommodations. Prospective students are encouraged to request a consultation with the designated Accessibility Services Officer prior to admission. All students are encouraged to request accommodations as far in advance of when the accommodation will be required as possible to allow the University to process the request and provide approved accommodations. The Student Services Office (SSO) requires at least one week to review requests for accommodations and accompanying documentation to determine eligibility of services. Program requirements cannot be modified to accommodate a disability.
The following applies to accommodation requests:
- Disabilities must meet the definition of a disability as defined under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the American with Disabilities Act as amended (ADA). Accessibility Services requires current and complete documentation from the student’s diagnosing, treating clinician. Qualified clinicians are licensed, non-familial, follow established practices in the field, and are most often physicians, licensed psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, or licensed therapists. Documentation must describe how the disability limits one or more major life activities and to what extent the student experiences disability-related, academic limitations and provide specific, recommended accommodations. It should also be written within a reasonable timeframe relative to the disability.
- Documentation must contain the name, title, and professional credentials of the evaluator. Evaluation reports should be on letterhead, be typed, dated, and signed, and should include information about what tests and/or records were used to make the determinations. This information is kept confidential unless the student specifically authorizes disclosure.
- A confidential meeting with the student and a designated Accessibility Services Officer is arranged for a collaborative meeting regarding accommodation request and to review all submitted accommodation forms.
- A request for accommodations does not guarantee approval. It does guarantee an interactive process to reach a decision on the request and a diligent review of the request and the student’s file.
- Accommodations cannot fundamentally alter a student’s program or impose an undue burden. An accommodation provided at a previous institution may not be appropriate for the student’s program at SCU.
- Accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis and are dependent on a student’s current functional limitations.
- Accommodations are not retroactive. They are active from the time they are approved.
- If an accommodation(s) is granted, the Letter of Accommodation is signed by the student and the Disability Officer.
- Disability accommodations are granted for a single term, a single academic year, or for the duration of the student’s program of study. It is the student’s responsibility to submit a request for an accommodation to be renewed or extended.
- The student is responsible for providing the Letter of Accommodation to their instructors prior to the start of each course for which an accommodation applies, or as soon as possible thereafter. Students may decide if and when to share this Letter of Accommodation with instructors. However, instructors cannot provide accommodations prior to receipt of the Letter of Accommodation, accommodations are never retroactive, and instructors must receive the Letter of Accommodation with enough time to reasonably provide the approved accommodations. If the instructor needs guidance or has questions, Accessibility Services is available.
