HGEN 506 - Human Microbiome and Infectious Disease The human body is home to trillions of microbes and parasites. Only a small fraction of species are pathogenic; most microbes do not produce adverse health effects and some contribute to human health. This growing area of research is enabled by advancements in direct nucleic acid sequencing of microbial samples. The role of the human microbiome in health and disease is discussed as well as the use of genomic technologies for surveillance, diagnosis, and tracking of infectious disease.
